My Learning Journey 1

Posted in God, Me, love by graceleong87 - Nov 06, 2009

Last evening’s Bible Study addressed the topic on the consequences of sin. The following verses direct us to the 33 different kinds of sin of the human race, since the fall of Adam. (Remember the apple??) Of course, there are more stated in the verses of the Bible. It is just astonishing how depraved and how wretched a man’s heart, thoughts and actions are! :( Yes, that includes you and me. If you could, please just take some time to read and reflect upon it. :)

Adam, Eve and the Apple

Adam, Eve and the Apple

What are the different types of sins mentioned in the Bible?

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators (sexual sins between unmarried persons), nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites (someone who engages in anal copulation) , nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers (abusive speech), nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Context: Paul was addressing the Church in Corinth.  The 6th Chapter consists chiefly of two parts. In the first he inveighs against law-suits, with which they harassed one another, before unbelievers, to the great dishonor of the gospel. In the second he reproves indulgence in fornication, which had come to such a pitch, that it was almost looked upon as a lawful thing. He sets out with a heavy threatening, and afterwards enforces that threatening with arguments. (John Calvin’s Commentary)

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness (blasphemy), idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies (factions, taking sides), envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

Context: Paul comes to make application of his foregoing discourse. He begins it with a general caution, or exhortation (ver. 1), which he afterwards enforces by several considerations, ver. 2-12. He then presses them to serious practical godliness, which would be the best antidote against the snares of their false teachers; particularly, I. That they should not strive with one another, ver. 13-15. II. That they would strive against sin, where he shows, 1. That there is in every one a struggle between flesh and spirit, ver. 17. 2. That it is our duty and interest, in this struggle, to side with the better part, ver. 16, 18. 3. He specifies the works of the flesh, which must be watched against and mortified, and the fruits of the Spirit, which must be brought forth and cherished, and shows of what importance it is that they be so, ver. 19-24. And then concludes the chapter with a caution against pride and envy. (Matthew Henry’s Commentary)

But the cowardly (!!!), unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Also, we have discussed how the term sins have been coined and packaged into various beautiful words by the world. Let me just cite a few examples which my friends have given.

Not believing in Jesus: “Freedom” (Reminds me of the racial harmony speech.)

Fornication: “Love” (Yea, I think that this is so true in youths and young adults and it is so evidently portrayed in present movies and drama serials! :( )

Covetous: “Status” (The Pradas and Coaches which probably eat up 90% of our salaries? I really do not fathom the need for them after all they are just bags with a better looking label. After which, they will still be tossed aside once the trend is moving forward, right? Oh well.)

We missed you though, CY! :D

The wages of sin is death.
